- Microsoft makes Windows 11 23H2 an automatic install for devices on version 22H2.
- The automatic upgrade will start on October 8, 2024, as version 22H2 reaches the end of support.
Microsoft plans to compel machines using versions 22H2 and 21H2 to update to Windows 11 23H2. Even though the 2023 Update was first made available on October 31, 2023, compatible devices could choose to install it or not. The next dissemination phase, however, began on October 8, 2024, when the corporation made version 23H2 automatically available through Windows Update.
Windows 11 21H2 for Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions, as well as Windows 11 22H2 for Home and Pro editions, will receive their final security update on October 8 as these versions approach end of service, according to the dashboard health website’s status note. For PCs running the Home and Pro editions of the operating system that are not under network administrator control, the company intends to initiate the upgrade to version 23H2 automatically.
Nevertheless, managed devices running the Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions will not receive automatic updates from the company. After October 8, they will no longer receive updates if they don’t receive them. Version 22H2 will finish support on October 8, 2024, and version 21H2 reached the end of service on October 10, 2023.
Since the two operating system versions are almost identical, you can upgrade to version 23H2 without giving it much thought if your computer is still running version 22H2. Microsoft wanted to install Copilot on as many devices as possible automatically without the user’s consent, therefore for this release, the corporation published a cumulative update for version 22H2 that included all the features and modifications anticipated for version 23H2.
To upgrade to version 23H2, go to Settings>Windows Update, make sure the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” toggle switch is turned on, click the “Check for updates” button, and then click the “Download & install” button.
The operating system won’t need to be completely reinstalled because the update is minor. The procedure should only take a few minutes, much like a typical monthly update. Therefore, since reinstallation is not required, using the Installation Assistant or any other tool is not advised.
If you want the update to install and apply itself, you don’t have to do anything. The computer will automatically upgrade in October.
It’s crucial to remember that your device won’t upgrade instantly if the new version is installed automatically. In order to guarantee that only devices that have had a positive upgrade experience will get the update first, the business intends to roll it out gradually.
Microsoft intends to release version 24H2, the upcoming operating system update, somewhere in (September or) October 2024, along with the automated distribution of version 22H2. This version will include numerous enhancements for current features. Along with a few other enhancements, the feature upgrade will come with new AI integrations.
